Tosoh Expands Certified Sustainable MDI Capacity with ISCC PLUS Approval

Tosoh Corporation has obtained ISCC PLUS certification for its MDI products manufactured at the Nanyo Complex in Shunan City, further advancing the company’s sustainable raw material integration strategy.

The certification enables Tosoh to apply the mass balance approach across its MDI production chain, allowing biomass- and recycled-derived feedstocks to be incorporated into conventional production streams while maintaining traceability under internationally recognized standards.

Strengthening Low-Carbon Polyurethane Feedstock Positioning

ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) is widely recognized across the chemical and polymer industries as a framework for verifying the responsible sourcing and allocation of renewable and recycled materials throughout the supply chain.

By securing this certification, Tosoh enhances:

  • Supply chain transparency

  • Compliance with global sustainability standards

  • Market access for certified low-carbon MDI products

  • Alignment with downstream customer ESG requirements

The introduction of mass balance accounting allows renewable and fossil-based feedstocks to be co-processed, with certified renewable content proportionally allocated to finished products. This approach provides operational flexibility while supporting carbon footprint reduction targets.

Strategic Implications for the MDI Market

Within the global polyurethane value chain, sustainability certification is becoming increasingly relevant for:

  • Construction insulation systems

  • Automotive lightweight components

  • Appliance and refrigeration foams

  • CASE applications

As downstream sectors tighten Scope 3 emissions tracking requirements, certified MDI supply is gradually shifting from a niche offering to a competitive differentiator.

Tosoh’s certification strengthens its positioning in the sustainable MDI segment and aligns its production footprint with evolving regulatory and customer expectations, particularly in markets where carbon traceability is gaining commercial importance.

Long-Term Sustainability Alignment

The company stated that it will continue operating in accordance with the latest ISCC PLUS requirements and regulatory updates, reinforcing its commitment to transparent governance and continuous improvement.

In the broader context of the polyurethane industry’s decarbonization pathway, ISCC PLUS certification represents not only compliance, but also strategic preparation for a market environment increasingly shaped by carbon accountability and circular material integration.
